This is one of 5 Limited Edition Yamazaki's released November 4, 2020. Compared to American oak, Spanish oak produces more tannins, leading to a more pronounced aromatic malt. Suntory sources their ex-Sherry casks–and they note that while ex-Sherry casks can be American or Spanish oak, Suntory chooses only the Spanish oak ones–are made from wood in the forests in the north of Spain. There’s a rich, concentrated sweetness and sourness going on.

This exceptionally rare and coveted Whisky is Ichiro Akuto’s only 100% Japanese Blended Whisky. The product of the last remaining ancient Akuto stocks (up to 40 years old), the blend comprises only malt from the Hanyu distillery and grain (corn) from Kawasaki. Ex-Bourbon and Sherry barrels were used for aging. Only 500 bottles have been released to the world for 2022, boxed in Mizunara Oak. Previous editions of this release have won “World’s Best Blended Limited Release” at the World Whiskies Awards on four separate occasions: no little thanks to the strength of the stock and the blender’s otherworldly expertise.
